Background
HIVOS is an international organization that seeks new solutions to recurrent global problems. With smart projects in the right places, we oppose discrimination, inequality, abuse of power and the unsustainable use of our planet’s resources. Counterbalance, however, is not enough. Our primary focus is on achieving structural changes. This is why we cooperate with innovative businesses, citizens and their organizations. We share a dream with them of sustainable economies and inclusive societies.

All Eyes on the Amazon (hereinafter called AEA) is a program that aims to protect the rainforest and defend the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities in the Amazon region of Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru.

Led by Hivos and Greenpeace, AEA is implemented by a coalition of eleven international and sixteen local organizations that work in the fields of Indigenous and human rights, environmental protection, law enforcement, research and technology, and communications and advocacy. International partners that form the coalition are: Coordinator of Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon River Basin (COICA), the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS), Digital Democracy, Global Forest Watch, the University of Maryland, INTERPOL LEAF, Both Ends, Witness and Article 19.

AEA operates in Brazil, Ecuador and Peru, at four levels of intervention. First, it applies innovative technologies to collect evidence, monitor and evaluate deforestation, the environmental impacts of extractive activities and business and financial chains affecting forests and local people. Secondly, it uses data and evidence that has been collected on the ground to promote campaigns, dialogue, and law enforcement at local, national, and international levels. Thirdly, it develops and applies tools and mechanisms for securing the rights of local people and activists, and for recognizing property rights of indigenous peoples in the Amazon. In addition, it provides support to strengthen local capacities to build alliances and influence policies, behaviors and resource management practices through social learning and innovation.

All Eyes on the Amazon has been made possible thanks to a contribution from the Dutch National Postcode Lottery, the Swedish Postcode Foundation, and United Kingdom Postcode Planet Trust.
