Position Overview The principal goal of the Exceptional Learning Coordinator is to help students achieve academic success in the Einstein School setting despite any adversities that individual students may face due to learning difficulties. This is accomplished by working with the Guidance Counselor, teachers, families, Principals, external professionals, as well as students on an individual and small group basis.
General Duties
Work closely with the Dean of Curriculum, Learning, and Innovation to seek ways to reach success for the largest number of Einstein learners.
Guide the Teachers, Guidance Counselors, and parents through the early detection and diagnostic process and the development of the Individual Education Plan IEP for students who require it.
Manage a caseload of all students with Individual Education Plans, supporting Principals, Teachers, and Guidance Counselors in achieving the necessary strategies and approaches to learning necessary for the success of each student with an IEP.
Support Teachers in differentiating learning strategies in order to reach a wide range of learners in the regular classroom.
Supervise Speech Therapist, Special Needs Assistants when applicable
Specific Duties and Areas of Accountability
Work closely with the Student Counseling Coordinator to provide a balanced approach to meeting students socioemotional and learning needs.
Liaise with the Student Counseling Coordinator for all things related to the DECE at the Ministry of Education level, understanding that the Student Counseling Coordinator is the legal representative of socioemotional and special education processes before the Ministry of Education.
Support the Teachers and Guidance Counselors in the early detection of students with special learning needs.
Complete preliminary diagnostics and observations to determine when it is necessary to refer a student to an external specialists for diagnostic testing, and then coordinate the process with the parents, when it becomes necessary.
Oversee the learning process for all students with a documented Individual Education Plan, liaising with teachers, guidance counselors, and parents, as needed.
Train teachers and principals in the specific methodologies and approaches required for each students with an Individual Education Plan, including supporting teachers as students transition across grade levels and Divisions.
Together with the corresponding Guidance Counselor, develop Individual Education Plans for students who are formally diagnosed with special learning needs.
Update all Individual Education Plans once per year, normally in preparation for the following school year, meeting with teachers, guidance counselors, and parents, as necessary during the process and collecting the necessary signatures.
Run the Acceleration and Enrichment Program for students, including teaching the pull out program for students who require it, according to their Individual Education Plan.
Coordinate crossgrade level acceleration for students whose Individual Education Plan merits, including processing documentation with the Ministry of Education, in conjunction with the Registrar and Student Counseling Coordinator.
Attend grade level meetings to share information, make decisions and manage information about situations related to students that have learning difficulties.
Accompany teachers in meetings with parents and external specialists when necessary, for students with special learning needs.
Oversee the Tutoring Program
Afterschool tutoring program Advising students when to seek extra help from teachers after school Monday through Thursday on the day arranged in the teachers schedule, and helping to coordinate tutoring sessions, when necessary.
External tutoring program maintaining a database of schoolapproved tutors recommend tutoring to parentsstudents, only when internal support has not been sufficient to keep the student on track for successful learning. Liaise between external tutors and classroom teachers, in order to provide balance support to the student.
For students in Primary School, in conjunction with the Primary Principal, coordinate Language Support Services with the language support teachers, striving to eliminate language support and fully incorporate students into the regular language classroom as quickly as possible.
Proctor admissions exams for students who are applying for Admission to Einstein School exam schedules will be set jointly with the Admissions Coordinator.
Oversee the speech therapy program and supervise the Speech Therapist.
Supervise Special Needs Assistants in the event that any students with Exceptional Learning Needs require an Assistant as part of the IEP.
Form part of the Evaluation Committee.
Evaluation
The Exceptional Learning Coordinator is evaluated according to Policy 4.19.2 Performance Evaluation of NonTeaching Academic Staff.
Qualifications
Masters degree in special education or psicopedagogía, or another related field.
